My Favorite Free Procreate Brushes and How to Download Them

What is Procreate?

Procreate is a great app for digital artists and aspiring designers. Whether you’re a seasoned professional, just starting out, or are considering downloading the app, knowing how to import brushes will become crucial. This application is available to purchase you if you have an iPad and an Apple Pencil. It is one of the cheaper options, at $12.99 for Procreate, compared to Adobe and Clip Studio Paint that have subscription-based purchases. The developer also offers a $4.99 pocket version for iPhone users, if you prefer that!

Luckily, there are a ton of free and affordable brush sets available at your fingertips, and they can provide you the tools you need to create stunning compositions. Procreate has 200 brushes downloaded with the app.

For me, I utilize Procreate for 2D drawings and illustrations. The brushes I use are specifically for lineart and to add textures while rendering. That’s why I’ve decided to put together this guide to my favorite sites for downloading and finding free brushes for Procreate. Now that we are entering October, there will be more opportunities to find free brushes to test and create with!

How to Download Procreate Brushes?

It can be a mutli-step process to download new brushes from Files, but it can easily be done in a few moments. There is a great video from Design Cuts that can explain and guide users through this process. Design Cuts also provides a quick guide to downloading fonts as well.

My Favorite Brushes

  1. Jingsketch Procreate Brushes: Basic 10

Jingsketch is one of the most well-known artist with a free and almost essential brush pack. There is a mix of sketch, paint, and even smudge brushes that are available with this set. To download, you simply put $0 for the ‘name a price’ section. You are free to add a tip to the artist if you are able. From there, you enter your email and then download them into your files.

My go-to brushes from this brush pack are the GvW Blank Outliner brush and the Thin Ink brush. I prefer brushes that do not have the streamline affect, the assist that smooths out the shakiness of a line.

  1. Megkpart’s Pencil Inks

This brush pack offers some amazing selections for doing digital sketches. These brushes allow easy, smooth sketches and opportunities to layer on. There is a mix of sketch and ink brushes that are available with this set. Like the Jingsketch Basics, it can be downloaded off gumroad.com.

  1. Procreate’s 6B Pencil Brush

This is one of the free brushes available to users after they purchase, and download procreate. It can be found under the ‘Sketching’ section of the brush library. From simple sketches, to messing around with the pressure, you can find something worthwhile with this brush!

  1. Procreate’s Studio Pen

Another brush that is available through Procreate’s brush library. You can find this one under the ‘Inking” section. This is one of my go-to options for completing lineart. It is like the Jingsketch GvW Blank Outliner brush but doesn’t require the additional steps to download.

  1. WITHALLSTARS Brush Pack

When I draw backgrounds, this is my go-to brush pack for the task. It has everything one may need from coloring to even textures!

  1. Johajaho’s Brush Packs on Gumroad

For those interested in dabbling into rendering without lineart, or simply wanting to try textured brushes over lineart brushes, I would recommend trying any one of Johajaho’s free brush packs.

Final Thoughts

A brush that I enjoy may not be your favorite brush or even one you continue using. It takes time and application to discover what styles you would rather delve into. The process is different for everyone!
